Don't Violate Tiny House Zoning/Building Codes

Tiny Houses are illegal in MANY areas due to zoning laws and/or building codes. What happens if you ignore the zoning/building code laws, and do it anyway? DON’T DO IT!

    I hear yah.
I follow the speed limit even when cars around me are doing 80, because it seems I’m the one most likely to get pulled over.

In Maryland its impossible to own one. Building codes are terrible here. These videos showing shed conversions are nice but the topic of codes is never discussed. Thank You for the information.

Solid thoughtful video. It may be instructive for folks to look at the laws and see why they are the way they are. Many, like electrical and structural inspections, are addressing perceived safety issues (NFPA 70E is all about not burning your house down). Others, like not parking an RV or colors for your siding, are intended to preserve property values. There’s probably a place somewhere in this country that makes easy the things you want and makes difficult the things you don’t, and it’s all tied to what the community is trying to do with the laws.

Living/working every week to sleep under a roof is the saddest part of life we don’t need a lot and banks/agents/government doesn’t want it to end a lot of people make good money but always chase the wheel

It’s crazy to think how hard it is to have a small house with just a compost toilet and rain water collection for the sinks and shower. Having towns, cities, and communities hooked up to one system is ignorant. What if war happened, or natural disaster, or a breakdown of that system. Has nature not told us that a diversity of systems is best. Whats more destructive to the environment a compost toilet or putting in a septic tank… you can use the compost to bring nutrients back to the soil.

California has some of the strictest laws, which is so stupid since we having a GIANT housing problem

  13. @annetteericsson266 on February 25, 2025 at 8:00 pm

It is redicolus what this country has become. Best to move to unincorporated land Where there are no permits. Here in Washington you need a permit to just paint your house same color mind you. It’s sad. I am 61 can’t afford to rent a place let alone buy one. I have to rent a room from my son for now which is not a good situation at all. I am looking to move where I can put a tiny house but the flip side I will be far away from all my kids too. Lose lose no matter how you cut it

  14. @genevelis6075 on February 25, 2025 at 8:00 pm

Your neighbors will report you anonymously to the county zoning department and HOA and then your life will become a hell. They will start charging you crazy fees, they also have an army of attorneys who will sue your ass off unless you comply and bound to their feet. Don’t ask me how I know it.

  15. @openyoureyes3969 on February 25, 2025 at 8:01 pm

Its hard to feel free in this country when every time you turn around, you’re being told something completely harmless is illegal

  18. @mightymulatto3000 on February 25, 2025 at 8:04 pm

So Thoreau’s Walden cabin would be illegal today? Or like a wigwam would be illegal too?

  19. @davidadamson3664 on February 25, 2025 at 8:05 pm

All these people telling you "just do it" are essentially agreeing with you that this is not permitted. There are severe ($$$) consequences. Even if you fight it in court, you will be spending thousands and taking years only to loose in the end.

  20. @laser31415 on February 25, 2025 at 8:06 pm

Zoning in my town is minimum of 20′ to a side and minimum 900 sqr ft. Must have electrical hooked up and electric and city water city sewer. Must have permanent foundation. Anything bigger then 4’x4′ needs building permit. This is all the result of "ugly trailers" from the 70s. They wrote it specifically to ban anything that might resemble one.

  21. @jamesharrigan7063 on February 25, 2025 at 8:07 pm

Should have just done the roof without asking,

  22. @timvarney5429 on February 25, 2025 at 8:10 pm

I bought a tiny home on my own property got the permit can you do the framing and stairs do you know if that permit allows me to move windows and doors around with that permit homeowners permit just figured I would ask because I’m not sure I could call the county dealing with them is another story

  23. @evandorco5193 on February 25, 2025 at 8:11 pm

I think I’m gunna build my home and just hide it from those punks they allowed the previous owner to illegal dump and cut trees on state land idiots

  24. @scottc8152 on February 25, 2025 at 8:11 pm

Finding areas with no zoning restrictions are where I want to build. Find out from residents how the zoning and permit restrictions are before you buy anywhere.

  25. @tiffytoo on February 25, 2025 at 8:15 pm

Do it legal the last thing you want to do is build illegally and have it torn down. Some of us appreciate truthful info because we want to do this legally.

  26. @williamforsythe5850 on February 25, 2025 at 8:16 pm

There has to come a point when you say F-U to all the people trying to control you and just live. They may think they own you, but I wasn’t born a slave and won’t live like one. They are humans too and the government does not own anything, they work for us. We have a right to live, just like they do. It’s no different than fighting off the roman army trying to take you as a servant and destroy your life. Fight back against this crap. Just because they say it, doesn’t mean that you have to do it. Be willing to die for your freedoms like our forefathers, or you will live as a slave forever.

I live in Florida and I bought me a shed and turned it into a tiny home not realizing what I was getting into there is a lot of codes and a lot of problems with buying tiny homes some places in Florida allow it some don’t and certain counties but that’s my opinion they are nailing me to the wall with this tiny home

  29. @user-ee5om8wy7u on February 25, 2025 at 8:20 pm

Thank you for informative video. It is helpful but also depressing.
In a free DEMOCRATIC country, laws should be made BY THE PEOPLE and FOR THE PEOPLE. If the laws are made by "who knows who" and then imposed ON people – that’s not a free country – that’s a SOVIET REGIME. And I’m amazed how local people brag about US freedoms while their governments TOTALLY control and regulate (as in totalitarian government) every little thing (even colors!) about their living space. Amazing it is that people silently live with such governments and do not protest nor do anything whatsoever!? Somehow people don’t even know they’re not free. Government did a good thing by brainwashing its slaves into thinking that they are free. A slave, who thinks he is free and not a slave, won’t even rebel against its ruler! And the US people seem to be just that – slaves that think they are truly free on a free land. Wake up! Your land is so "free" that there’s nothing at all you can do on it without someone else dictating you what you can and can’t do!🕵 What kind of "freedom" is that?

  31. @rcor0net304 on February 25, 2025 at 8:23 pm

So called Authority. Fee’s fines fo fums. Building code is unsafe unhealthy ways. Where does the fee fines go? Lining their pockets.

  32. @waynegross2113 on February 25, 2025 at 8:23 pm

Yep, anymore the government sticks it’s nose in private property way to much. I think anyone on a half acre of property should be allowed a garden and a few chickens. Our garden has been in existence for years. Our neighbors decided to plant one, the zoning guy told them they couldn’t. It’s considered agricultural. So the neighbors got mad at us of coarse. The zoning guy came back out to our neighbors to explain it was grandfathered property. But we were also told if we didn’t plant a garden every year we’d lose that privilege. So when I had a heart attack the neighbors on the other side planted it so I wouldn’t lose the privilege. Is this not all rediculous!!!!

  33. @shootermcgavin4999 on February 25, 2025 at 8:24 pm

Time to get out of this country.

  34. @michaelhuebner6843 on February 25, 2025 at 8:24 pm

Permits exist so that the government can revalue your home and take extra taxes and fees from you.

  37. @lovesdoggies1481 on February 25, 2025 at 8:27 pm

So if u go off grid and not set up with electric and sewer u still need permit to build? I’m new to all of it

  38. @amandalofranco6617 on February 25, 2025 at 8:28 pm

I’m so sorry for being nosey but for context purposes.. what state do you live? I am new to the channel. We live in SWFL we are about to take on a farm management position. The property is currently zoned A-1. We would like to build "tiny home" structures on property but need to research beforehand.. (different county than our current) Would it be better to rezone it AG.. but that would take 6 to 8 months.. we need to get on property and start work as soon as possible.. we’ve looked into local camp grounds but they’re asking for nearly $900 off season and $1900 peak season per month.. that is not feasible
for us.. we would like to just have an rv park it there but we cannot do that with the current zoning.. Any advice aside from an rv and towing it away every day.. or paying that much for a camp ground?

  43. @lovesdoggies1481 on February 25, 2025 at 8:37 pm

So I’m lost the government offers free solar if u own your Home it must be sewer they are most concerned with and storms safe

  44. @alhaah777 on February 25, 2025 at 8:38 pm

It sounds too strict, but we live in` a community. So what we do may be harmful to others. We have to follow the public rules. Otherwise, our society will be caotic.
